Summer 2022 Clinics

 (1st
A Work in Process: Improving a Play Dough Process
Ages: Incoming 1st and 2nd graders
Dates: July 25-29th, 2022
Times: 9am-12pm
Spaces: Limited to 16 participants
Place: One of the island schools: TBA

Description: Students will investigate mixtures and chemical engineering each morning by creating recipes using a variety of substances such Gak, Silly Putty, Oobleck, and several variations of Slime! We will then read the storybook Michelle’s MVP Award, in which a girl named Michelle living in Canada explores the field of Chemical Engineering to turn her play dough “recipe” into a complete play dough making process that others can easily follow. Over the course of the unit, students explore solids, liquids, and possible outcomes of mixing the two; conduct product research; and develop a process for others to follow. Like Michelle, students then follow the steps of the Engineering Design Process to imagine, plan, create, and improve their own process for producing play dough.

Instructor: Heidi Ganser has taught 1st and 2nd grade in the Oak Bluffs school for 25 years. She is currently a K-4 reading specialist there. Heidi was one of the original co-founders of STEAM MV and is excited that it is up and running again after a short hiatus during the pandemic. She loves teaching STEAM to young children!

The Science of
Rainbows and Rocketry
Ages: Incoming 1st and 2nd graders (only 1 or 2 spaces left!)
Dates: August 1st-5th, 2022
Times: 9am-12pm
Spaces: Limited to 16 participants
Place: One of the island schools: TBA

Description: Each morning students will engage in experiments as they discover the science and magic behind ROYBIV, the only visible light waves. Learn about what makes a rainbow and how you can make your own rainbows! Students will spend the second part of each morning designeing, building, and launching simple air and water rockets while learning about the science of pressure and forces. Participants will then be able to re-design their rockets in order to make them launch farther, decorate their designs, and build ways to help their rockets fall back to earth slowly. .

Adventures in Architecture
Ages: Incoming Kindergardeners and 1st Graders (wait list only)
Dates: July 25-29th, 2022
Times: 9am-12 pm
Spaces: Limited to 12 participants
Place: One of the island schools: TBA

Instructor: Cana Courtney is a recent college graduate who is now working at the West Tisbury School. Cana has worked at both the preschool and elementary level and loves creating exciting and hands-on learning experiences for all students!

Description: Have you ever tried to create something out of nothing? Join us as we explore and create models of buildings, bridges, and more! Participants will plan, design, and test their creations while using everyday materials found around the house.

Explorations in Movement
Ages: Incoming 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders
Dates: July 25-29th
Times: 9am-12pm
Spaces: Limited to 16 participants

Instructor: Sheila McHugh grew up on the island taking, and eventually teaching dance classes and camps. She has worked with children of all ages as a therapeutic mentor, childcare provider, counselor, and teacher.  She has always been inspired by the island landscape in her own work. She is now working back on island as a high school guidance counselor and excited to participate in the STEAM program this summer.

Description: This STEAM clinic will allow dancers to investigate natural processes through movement exploration. We will work in small groups, large groups, partnerships, and more, using movement as a medium to learn about topics ranging from water cycles, planets and outer space, life cycles, animal movement and behavior, and so much more. These topics will inherently allow students to learn about shape, speed, form, and dimension while they engage in activities together.
Students will begin the day with icebreakers and warm ups, then take time to learn about a new science topic through a story, lab, or nature walk. Following that we will try to recreate what we have learned through dance. The session will end with a small dance performance for family and friends, to display what we have learned over the course of our time together.
Open to all experience levels, no prior dance classes are required.

Solar Powered Cars
Ages:
Incoming 5th-8th graders
Dates: July 25-29th, 2022
Slots: Limited to 16 participants
Place: One of the island public schools, TBA

Instructor: Bodie Waldrop is the Engineering Teacher for the Oak Bluffs School. His college degree is in Environmental Chemistry, and he has a passion for all the sciences. Bodie also attended Law School, focusing on Environmental Law and Intellectual Property. Bodie teaches how to ask good questions, and uncovering the “why” and “because” of scientific principles that govern our everyday life.

Description: Particiipants will learn about transportation systems and how to make a solar powered car! Our goal will be to learn about energy transfer and how Solar Panels transfer energy from the sun into electrical energy, powering an electric motor. In the process, we will also learn about friction and other forces that power movement.

Harnessing the Power of Wind:
Building a Wind Turbine

Ages: Incoming 5th-8th graders
Dates: August 1st-5th, 2022
Slots: Limited to 16 participants
Place: One of the island schools: TBA

Description: In this week’s STEAM clinic, students will learn about how our world’s energy generation works while building functional small scale wind turbines. Students will discover how generators work with magnets and electricity, as well as the science of current, voltage, and resistance. Students will gain an understanding renewable resources and the future of the world’s energy generation.

Up, up and away!
Ages: Incoming 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders (filling up fast!)
Dates:  August 1st-5th, 2022
Times: 9 am-12 pm
Spaces: Limited to 16 participants
Place: One of the island schools: TBA

Instructor: Alicia Knight is currently a third grade teacher at the Edgartown School where she has taught for 20 years.  Through an explorative approach she will allow these young engineers the time and space to learn and create.

Description: Participants will work collaboratively and their efforts will be celebrated.
Together, we will learn about a variety things that fly for the purpose of designing a few of our own.  Materials will be provided for these young engineers to put their models to the test. We'll launch, reflect and redesign so as to improve our high fliers.   Airplanes, rockets, rovers, catapults - come share in the process of creating things that propel through the air.

Steam MV is a Program of Martha's Vineyard Public School
